Abstract

[Also in Group XVIII] A vat, paddle, drum or like container, for use in treating leather has a doorway in the wall surface thereof through which the contents of the container can be discharged directly into a truck or other receptacle, and a co-operating door is mounted to slide from an open to a closed position and vice versa, between parallel guide means which are shaped to follow the contour of the outer wall surface of the container and which are secured to the latter one on each side of said doorway, a flexible inflatable tube being located in an outwardly directed channel provided around the outer rim of the doorway and being arranged, on inflation when the door is closed, to bear between the aforesaid channel and the marginal edge of the inner door surface to provide a substantaially liquid tight closure of said doorway. As shown, a cylindrical drum 20 has a doorway 21 in the drum wall surrounded by a frame 22 comprising an outwardly directed channel section 22a adjacent to and around the door opening. An inflatable tube 23 is arranged within the channel section and provides a liquid seal when the door 24 is closed. The door slides within parallel guides 26 which extend beyond both the upper and lower edges of the doorway 21. The door itself is twice the length of the doorway and has a perforated lower half 24a. Thus the door may be closed, may be open to allow liquid to drain through the perforations 24b, or open to allow the contents of the drum to be discharged completely. The tube 23 is fitted with an air relief valve (not shown) controlled by a pivoted door locking device (not shown) having a plunger arranged to register in holes in the door, so positioned that either the plain section or the perforated section of the door covers the doorway. The door cannot be displaced when the tube is inflated and the tube cannot be inflated until the door is correctly positioned.
