Abstract
1,182,782. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Oct., 1967 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 48071/66. Heading H1N. A vacuum switch has two pairs of contacts connected in series, the movable contacts 19, 21 being mounted on a bellows assembly 23, 25 which can be expanded to close the contacts against the action of tension springs 33, 35 by increasing the pressure of a conducting liquid 39 filling the bellows and connecting together the movable contacts. The conducting liquid may be mercury or a sodium-potassium eutectic alloy. One movable contact 19 carries a rod 27 sliding in a tube 29 attached to the other movable contact 21 and itself sliding in a tube 31 attached to the envelope of the switch so as to allow relative longitudinal movement but prevent lateral movement of the contacts. The rod and tubes may be coated with low friction, insulating material such as p.t.f.e. The bellows are of stainless steel.
