Abstract

1,129,179. Fluid actuation of switches. DUNEDIN INSTRUMENTATION Ltd. 20 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966], No. 42477/66. Heading H1N. A pressure-responsive switch comprises a plunger 4 having axially-spaced faces of which one face is arranged to be acted upon by the fluid pressure and the other face 5 forms a movable contact of a pair 5, 7, of contacts or is arranged to engage a movable contact, and a pair of springs 11, 15 opposing the contactclosing movement of plunger 4, spring 11 acting before spring 15, the stiffness of spring 11 being such that as the fluid pressure increases plunger 4 moves in the contact-closing direction against the force of spring 11 until spring 15 begins to exert a force to oppose its further movement, the combined force of both springs being greater than that corresponding to the maximum fluid pressure to which the plunger is subjected, to prevent any further contact-closing movement of plunger 4. Contact 7 is adjustable and the initial pressure on spring 11 is adjustable by plug 12. The combined initial length of spring 15 and collar 16 is less than that of spring 11. Bush 6 supporting fixed contact 7 is of insulating material, plunger 4 and housing 1 may be of steel or other metal to provide a conducting path. If plunger 4 is of electrically non-conductive material or is insulated from housing 1 an intermediate contact may be provided between fixed contact 7 and plunger 4.
