Abstract

1317237 Vacuum switches INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 21 Oct 1971 [26 Oct 1970] 48900/71 Heading H1N In a vacuum switch a pair of rod contacts 5, 6, Fig. 1, fixed in the enclosure wall 4 are bridged by a shorting bar 15 mounted on a resilient portion 19 of the enclosure wall and movable as through a linkage support 17 in response to an externally applied force. The rod contacts 5, 6 are enclosed in alumina ceramic sleeves 20, 21 sealed at opposite ends by metal rings 22, 24 to the enclosure wall 4 and to the contacts 5, 6. The resilient portion 19 may comprise a diaphragm of stainless steel, vacuum sealed to a threaded stud 18 of the actuator. The inner metal liners 2, 3, 4, 19 and sleeves 20, 21 may be enclosed in a coating 27 of silicone rubber, fluorocarbon rubber or other yielding insulating material to which an outer conductive and earthed shield 28 may be applied. In modifications the fixed rod contacts may be mounted in rigid end pieces of thin flexible tubular enclosures of metal, one or more shorting bars being attached to the flexible tubular wall.
