Abstract

1,125,705. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 Nov., 1965 [31 Dec., 1964], No. 53012/64. Heading H1N. The contacts 1, 2 of a vacuum switch are mounted at the ends of conducting stems 3, 4 which are mounted in insulating end walls 17, 18 of the evacuated enclosure, the side wall 6 of the enclosure comprising an extensible metal bellows. The bellows is attached at its ends to metal rings 9, 10. The contact stems 3, 4 are attached by metal diaphragms 13, 14 to further, concentric rings 15, 16 which are spaced from rings 9, 10 by glass spiders 11, 12, the ends of the enclosure being sealed by bodies 17, 18 of cast or moulded synthetic resin formed with corrugations to increase the creepage path. In a modification (not shown) the bellows may be replaced by a simple metal wall of a shape having the necessary resiliency. For example the wall may have a hyperbolic longitudinal cross-section; only part of the side wall need be flexible.
