Abstract

1,181,030. R.F. sputtering. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. July 17, 1968 [July 24, 1967], No.34014/68. Heading C7F. [Also in Division C1] Apparatus for sputtering dielectric materials comprises a vacuum chamber 10, means 12 for evacuating gas from the chamber, a first electrode 15 for electrically contacting items 16 to be coated, a second electrode 18 within a tube made of a dielectric material 17 to be coated on the items 16, and an R. F. power source connected to the said first and second electrodes for causing particles of the dielectric material to be formed into a plasma, and to coat the items. The said second electrode may be an elongated strip of metal coiled in spiral fashion inside the tube of the dielectric material, which may be aluminium borosilicate glass, quartz, or preferably magnesium aluminosilicate glass. The substrates may be of germanium or silicon.
