Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a tube-drawing machine having a plurality of plug rods 1 mounted on a rotatable drum 2, the axial position of each rod 1 carrying a tube to be drawn is finely adjustable when in the operative position by a screw-threaded means 8 rotatable by a motor 7, the two being coupled when the rod 1 is extended towards the die 17 by the engagement of an externally-toothed hub 13 and an internally-splined collar 12 respectively rotatable with the screw-threaded means 8 and the motor 7. A tube to be drawn is passed over a plug rod 1 in the upper loading position and the drum 2 rotated through 180 degrees to the lower operative position whereby a lug 5 engages in a groove in a carriage 6. The plug rod 1 is moved to the operative position towards the die 17 by reciprocating the carriage 6 by means of an hydraulic piston and cylinder 4. The external teeth of the hub 13 are caused to be engaged between the teeth of the collar 12 so that the motor 7 may rotate the hub 13, which rotates spur gears 9 controlling an adjusting nut 8 which axially adjusts the plug rod 1. If the hub and collar teeth abut when the rod 1 is moved to the operative position, a spring 14 is compressed and causes the teeth of the hub 13 and collar 12 to engage between each other as soon as the motor 7 is started. The coupling is automatically disengaged when the plug rod 1 is retracted.
