Abstract

1,086,357. Rolling. MANNESMANN-MEER A.G. Sept. 23, 1964 [Sept. 30, 1963], No. 38800/64. Heading B3M. A pilger rolling mill, of the kind in which a billet is turned between successive rolling steps, includes a lobed cam which modifies the indexing of the billet so that the billet does not rotate through exactly 60 degrees at each rolling step, thus distributing wear on the rolls by the billet more uniformly. A stand 1, including rolls 7, is reciprocated by cranks 2 from a motordriven crank-shaft 4, an indexing control shaft 12 being driven from a common gear-box 5. Rotation of the rolls is produced by the meshing of pinions 9 with fixed racks 8, while the shaft 12 and a gear-box 11, provide rotation and axial feeding of the billet 30 on a mandrel 29. The shaft 12 rotates a three-lobed cam 22, Fig. 3, at a 3 to 1 reduction ratio, and simultaneously rotates a worm 18 which in turn drives a billet rotating shaft 20 through a worm-wheel 19. The rotation of the wheel 19 is modified by axial movement of the worm 18 superimposed on its rotation, caused by a follower 23 rolling on the cam 22.
