Abstract

1,062,069. Rolling. MORRIS MOTORS Ltd. Nov. 17, 1965 [Dec. 1, 1964], No. 48682/64. Heading B3M. A machine for rolling splines, screw threads or worms in a metal article comprises a pair of heads (3), (4) carrying rolls (5), and slidable on slideways (2), and hydro-mechanical means for moving the heads so that the rolls engage the workpiece simultaneously. The axes of the rolls (5) lie on the same horizontal plane as the axis of the workpiece, and the latter is carried in a fixture (6), comprising a centre (7), and a live centre (8), carried in a sliding tailstock (9). The centre may be replaced by V-plates, or a combination of V-plates and centres may be used. The drive for the rolls is provided by an electric motor which drives a belt and adjustable pulley arrangement connected to a main drive box (10), the output shaft (11) of the box drives shafts (18), (19) through gears (13), (15), and each of these shafts is connected to the arbor (24) of a roll (5) by a worm and wheel (20), (21), a shaft (22), and helical gearing (23). Shaft (18) is journalled in a floating housing (25), Fig. 6 (not shown), and can be axially adjusted to by a micrometer (26). Sliding heads (3), (4) are actuated simultaneously to move the rolls relative to the work by levers (36), which are connected to recirculating ball type lead screws (35), Fig. 1 (not shown). The latter are moved axially by nuts rotated by shafts (32), (33), fixed on to a worm-wheel (30), rotated by a worm (29), driven by an hydraulic motor (28). The limits of travel of the heads are controlled by adjustable stops (41), (42). Backlash in the gearing is eliminated during feed movement of heads (3), (4), by a self-adjusting brake (43), Fig. 5 (not shown), fitted on to each roll arbor (24). Each brake comprises a drum (44) keyed to the arbor, and a friction member (45) riveted to a shoe (46) pivoted at (47). Each of the brakes is applied during movement of the head towards the work, by a spring- loaded button (48). However, when the head is retracted, a rod (49), Fig. 2 (not shown), abuts the stop (42) and displaces rods (50) (51), so that a plunger (52) disengages the brake.
