Abstract

A collapsible probe for use in taking gas samples for analysis from inaccesible places e. g. in mine . workings comprises a number of rigid tubular sections 1 with enlarged socket portions 3 enabling the sections to be connected end to end to form a rigid probe, and a flexible tube 2 passing through the sections 1 and forming a passage for the gas to be sampled. The section 1A is fitted with a head 5 with lateral orifices 7 allowing collection of a gas sample and the end of the sections 1 remote from the socket portions 3 are bevelled as at 4, to enable easy fitting of the section within the adjoining socket preferably by pulling on the flexible tube 2. A collar 8 retains the sections 1 on the tube 2, and the ends of each section 1 may be notched longitudinally to allow passage of the tube 2 when sections 1 are folded together in the collapsed state of the probe, to provide a compact arrangement. In alternative embodiments the sections 1 are disposed inside the tube 2 and held to form a rigid probe by sleeve members outside the tube 2, or the sections 1 may be inter-connected at their ends by short sections of flexible tube, outer sleves again being provided for holding the sections rigidly in alignment when desired.
