Abstract

<PICT:0890481/III/1> A device for taking a sample of a gas comprises three telescopic tubular rods and an aspirator bulb, the bulb forming part of a handle assembly connected to one end of the outer rod and being adapted for connection to any suitable gas detection instrument. The construction of the device is such that the tubular rods can be extended so that the end of the rod remote from the bulb can be positioned where the presence of gas is suspected, non-return valves being provided so that when the bulb is alternately squeezed and released a continuous flow of gas is supplied to the instrument. In Figure 2, the telescopic rod system consists of three sections (the joints between them being fluid tight), namely an inner tube 12, an intermediate tube 11 and an outer tube 10, the latter being joined to the aspirator assembly by means of the connecting member 13 fitted with a non-return valve 15. The other end of the aspirator bulb 19 makes a fluid-tight joint with a hollow handle 20 provided with a non-return valve 22. The end of the handle is fitted with a removable cylindrical plug 23 attached to cord 24. In the bore of the handle is a nipple 25 which can be connected to a gas detecting instrument. An upper bridge piece 26 constitutes a handle and a lower bridge piece 27 serves to protect the aspirator bulb. In the Provisional Specification the rod may consist of jointed hinged sections.
