Abstract

116,782. Napier & Son, D., and Rowledge, A. J. July 5, 1917. Clutches, friction.-In clutches of the kind operated by means of an auxiliary clutch and for use on motor-vehicles &c., a loose member carrying an electro-magnetic coil is retarded by engagement with the main driven member and brings the main clutch into action. Fig. 3 shows plate clutches for connecting a driving-shaft A either to a sleeve F or to a sleeve F<1>. The shaft A carries a flywheel B in which is secured a clutch-plate B<3>. A disk G either flexible or sliding on the driven sleeve F is adapted to be clutched between the plate B<3> and a sliding ring C<2> rotating with the fly-wheel B and operated by screwed pins C<3> engaging a sleeve D rotatable by weighted levers D' normally kept by spring action in contact with projections H<2> on a loose member H carrying an electro-magnet J. When the clutch is disengaged, the loose member H rotates with the levers D<1>. Excitation of the coil J retards the member H by frictional contact with the disk G, so that the levers D' are rocked and the pins C<3> are moved axially to bring the clutch into engagement. The sleeve F<1> may be driven through the clutch-plates C<x2>, Gx, and B<3> in a similar manner, except that the sleeve D is rotated by a toothed wheel D<3> geared to a wheel H<3> on the loose member H<x>. According to the Provisional Specification, the member H may carry cam-surfaces acting directly on the ring C<2>.
