Disk. - In clutches and brakes of the Weston multipleplate type, automatic tightening in the event of slip is obtained by the use of cam-parts rotated by auxiliary clutch parts. In the clutch shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the driving- casing a is connected to the drum J on the driven shaft by Weston plate c<1>, c alternately of phosphor bronze and mild steel or cast iron. A loose plate e bears on the end driven disk c and has cam surfaces e<1> engaged by rollers h on a loose ring h<2>, similar cam-surfaces a<2> being formed on the casing a. A spring f, under the control of a collar g and hand-lever, presses the plate e into contact with the end disk c to start the clutch engagement and at the same time check the speed of the plate e, relative movement between the cam-surfaces producing automatic tightening of the clutch. As applied to brakes, the casing a is made the stationary member.
