Abstract

1,167,334. Vacuum switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 June, 1967 [28 June, 1966], No. 28972/66. Heading H1N. The metal-shield surrounding the contacts of a vacuum switch is slotted or ridged so that any currents flowing in the shield during arcing are made to flow at an angle to the shield axis so as to create a magnetic field which rotates the arcs between the contacts and the shield. The two parts of the shield surrounding the two contacts are slotted or ridged in the opposite directions. The slots or ridges in the two parts may be joined. A further shield 18 surrounds the slotted portion of the shield. The contacts are also slotted as described in Specifications 997,384 and 922,012 but are slotted in the opposite direction to the respective parts of the shield so that the fields do not cancel.
