Abstract
1,195,026. Vacuum switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 14 Sept., 1967 [11 Oct., 1966], No. 45402/66. Heading H1N. A vacuum switch has a pair of coaxial contact carrying electrodes 11, 13 separated by a gap 14, the inner cylindrical electrode 11 having an outwardly extended conical portion 12 providing an annular contact surface 30 at an angle to the axis of the electrodes and the outer tubular electrode 13 having an inwardly directed portion 29 arranged to abut portion 12 in the closed position. Portion 29 is slotted radially (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) to divide the contact surface. Connections are made to both electrodes below the contacts 12, 29 so that the currents flowing in the two electrodes are in opposite directions; this creates a magnetic force driving the arc upwardly along the gap 14. The electrode 13 is of high resistance arc resistant material and is surrounded by a helix of high conductivity copper (Fig. 4, not shown) thus creating another magnetic force causing the arc to rotate around the annular gap .14. The contacts may be of the materials specified in Specifications 1,194,674 and 1,121,385.
