Abstract

1,167,138. Electro-plating with tin. NORTHERN ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec.13, 1966 [Jan.12, 1966], No.55800/66. Heading C7B. In a method of providing small electrical components with a thin electro-plated coating of tin, the plating conditions are controlled so as to inhibit absorption of hydrogen in the structure of the plating metal during the process of electroplating, and thereby prevent the spontaneous growth of whiskers on the coating of tin. To inhibit hydrogen absorption the plating solution may be agitated with ultrasonic energy during electro-plating or the polarity of the electrodes may be alternated during plating, e.g. to give phases of 7 secs. plating and 1 sec. deplating.
