Abstract

1,166,461. Fuel injection systems. RICARDO& CO. ENGS. (1927) Ltd. Oct. 18, 1966 [Aug. 26, 1965], No. 36820/65. Heading F1B. Fuel is initially supplied to the pressure chamber 11 at reduced pressure by a pressure reduction valve 27 which has associated therewith means for by-passing the valve at higher delivery rates. The fuel from an injector pump is supplied to passage 23 and initially flows through port 21 and passage 36 at a reduced pressure controlled by the spring-loaded plunger 27 to a piston 32, which is thereby forced to the left to cause a pilot injection at a slow rate determined by orifice 35. When piston 32 opens ports 22, 25, the plunger 27 is by-passed and the fuel flows through passage 26 at full delivery pressure. In a modification the restriction 35 is arranged between plunger 27 and piston 32. In Figs. 3 and 4 the pressure reducing plunger 49 is rotatable from an idling position as shown in Fig. 3, in which slots 50 are out of register with main delivery port 44 and all the fuel passes at reduced pressure through orifice 41, to a normal operating position in which the slots 50 interconnect the ports 42, 44, and the fuel is delivered at full pressure through passage 43. The plunger 39 is rotated by linkage 60...62, Fig. 4, operated from the pedal 54 controlling the fuel pump governor load spring 57.
