Abstract

1,026,790. Fuel injection pumps; starting fuel injection engines. C. A. V. Ltd. Jan. 4, 1965 [Jan. 9, 1964], No. 994/64. Headings F1A and F1B. [Also in Division E2] In a fuel injection pump in which the delivery is regulated by controlling the fuel supplied thereto by a feed pump, a by-pass valve is arranged to be opened by a spring to by-pass the regulating means to supply excess fuel for starting, the by-pass valve being closed by feed pump pressure when the engine starts. The combined rotating cylinder/distribution type pump shown is regulated by a feed pump pressure actuated shuttle which feeds metered volumes of fuel to the pump cylinder, the volume being regulated by a fly-weight governor controlled throttle 40 regulating the flow to a chamber 42 which feeds the shuttle. A passage 57 from the chamber leads to a port 52 which communicates with one of the inlet passage 23 when the shuttle chamber is in communication with another passage 23, communication between the passage 57 and port 52 being controlled by a valve 53 biased to the open position by a spring 54 and to the closed position by feed pump pressure and held in this position by a manually releasable lock 60 (see Div. E2). To start the engine the lock is released so that the valve opens and fuel by-passes the shuttle and flows directly to the pump cylinder. When the engine starts the feed pressure closes the valve and the lock re-engages. Timing is controlled by feed pump pressure acting through a passage 66 on a spring loaded piston controlling the angular position of the drive cam ring; to ensure full retardation on starting the valve 53 is arranged to close a port 68 supplying the passage 66. The lock returns to locking position when the engine starts even if it is held down.
