Abstract
1,061,764. Fuel injection pumps; rotary pumps. V.D. ROOSA. Sept. 3, 1963 [Sept. 10, 1962], No. 34723/63. Headings F1A and F1F. A fuel-injection pump comprises a rotary distributor 40 with a fuel-injection pump cylinder block 82 at one end and a vane-type feed pump 42 at the other end, the injection pump timing being controlled in relation to engine speed by the feed pump output pressure acting on a spring- loaded piston (156) Fig. 4 (not shown) which acts to angularly adjust a cam track 96 actuating the injection pump pistons 94. To prevent variation in the feed pump output pressure due to wear of the pump components, the feed pump vanes 134 are divided into two segments biased apart by springs (144), Fig. 3 (not shown), and by applying the output pressure between the segments, so that the ends of the vanes are biased against the eccentric surface 136 to compensate for wear. A valve 68 controls the output pressure/speed characteristic of the feed pump. The quantity of fuel injected is controlled in relation to engine speed and manual setting by a metering valve 76 controlling flow between the feed pump and the injection pump, and subjected to the feed pump output pressure and spring biasing to maintain a particular engine speed according to the setting of manual control rod 194, which adjusts the load of a spring (190), Fig. 6 (not shown), opposing the spring (168) biasing the valve 76 to its open position. Collars on rod 194 determine its maximum flow and idling settings. Cut-off of the fuel supply is controlled by a slide valve (206), Fig. (not shown), in bore 204. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), a spring-loaded check valve (208) is provided in passage 182 to control the pressure of leakage fuel in chamber (165) around valve 76 to modify the biasing of the valve 76. In another embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), remote manual control of valve 76 is effected hydraulically by controlling the spring- loading on a check valve (216) controlling a connection between chamber (165) around valve 76 and feed pump inlet 60. A throttle (167) is provided in passage (166) in valve 76 to prevent 'hunting' due to pressure surges. A ball valve (162), Fig. 5 (not shown), is provided in the connection between the feed pump outlet and the cylinder (154) housing the piston (156) controlling cam track 96, to provide a hydraulic lock preventing reverse flow of fuel due to torque tending to rotate cam track 96. A ball valve 110 in the injection pump inlet is limited in its opening movement by an adjustable stop 116. A hand priming pump may be connected to nipple 108. Distributor 40 has a transverse port 90 delivering to a plurality of injector passages 92.
