Abstract

1,163,489. Container closures. C. H. MALPAS. 8 Dec., 1967 [14 Dec., 1966], No. 55972/67. Heading B8T. A tap for use with vessels containing, e.g. beverages comprises a barrel 16 in sealing engagement with a concentric spigot 14; a close-fitting skirt 38 extends from a cap 32 attached to the spigot 14. On turning the spigot 14 the skirt 38 moves into register with an opening 30 in the barrel 16 after the openings 30, 42 have moved out of alignment. A probe 22 having openings 26 enables the device to pierce a diaphragm of a liquid container; and a non-circular flange 18 engages in a complementary seating in a housing (not shown) into which the tap is fitted to prevent rotation of the body 16 relative to the housing; an annular bead 28 engages in a recess in the housing to prevent axial movement. A short radial wall 44 engaging in a cut-away part of the barrel limits the turning of the spigot to about 180 degrees, turning being facilitated by finger grips 34 on the cap 32.
