Abstract

Ordnance, mechanical; projectile fuses, devices on gun for firing.-Relates to spring-operated bomb-projectors, and consists in mounting on an adjustable tripod a tube or barrel within which slides a spring- operated rack bar, the spring being cocked and automatically released by moving the rack through a toothed sector and pinion gear. Fig. 1 shows the bomb-projector mounted on the rear leg d of a tripod, the front legs a b of which are pivotally connected to a head c threaded to receive a screw h to the upper part of which the leg d is hinged at f. The screw is rotated by a hand-wheel i for varying the angle of projection. The projector comprises a barrel n supported by brackets l, m and a rack-bar o sliding within the barrel and controlled by a spring t. The bomb is received in a cup q provided with a recess to take the safetylever. To project the bomb, the rack bar is drawn rearwards and automatically released by operating an arm 4 extending from a toothed sector 2 which engages with a pinion z on a shaft w, which shaft also carries a pinion v engaging the rack bar and having a gap 1 to release the bar, as shown in Fig. 7. The sector 2 may be moved laterally out of engagement with the pinion z against spring action by operating a hand-lever 7.
