Abstract
23,604. Lynden, R. A. Baron van, and Lange, P. de. Dec. 5. Safety appliances applicable generally.-Relates to devices for preventing fire-arms from being fired except at a predetermined angle of elevation, such devices being of the kind having sensitive mechanism actuated by a pendulum or by a balanced lever combined with a shifting weight. According to the invention, the sensitive mechanism is mounted so that it can be rotated as a whole to set it for the required angle, and connecting it with the triggerobstructing member is a rotary member which turns on the same axis as the sensitive mechanism. The sensitive mechanism comprises a lever which normally occupies an unstable position against a stop, and a weight so mounted on or near the lever that, when the gun is turned to the correct inclination, the weight acts upon the lever and gives it an initial impulse, the lever then turning rapidly and releasing a catch. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6, the sensitive mechanism is enclosed in a dust-tight casing A, A<1>, A<2> mounted to rotate in a bearing B in the stock so that it can be adjusted to the required angle. Within the casing is a slide K, K', Figs. 1 and 2, connected to a sliding rod P', Figs. 2 and 6, which rests against the back of the trigger, by a rotary member cornprising a spindle N<2>, Fig. 2, passing through the side wall A<1> of the casing, and two toothed quadrants 0, N gearing with racks P, K<4> on the rod and slide respectively. Backward move.- ment of the slide, and therefore also of the rod P<1> and trigger, is limited by a catch H, H<1>, Fig. 1, which, when the gun is raised or lowered to the required elevation, is released by a blow from an unstable lever F, the initial impulse to which is given by a pendulum D, a rounded projection D<2> on the pendulum engaging a similar projection F<2> on the lever. The slide K<1> is pressed forwards by a spring L, and has a projection K<5> which engages a projection F<5> on the sensitive lever F and holds the lever firmly in position; thus the lever cannot be operated by the pendulum until the slide has been moved rearwards by a preliminary pull of the trigger. The frame in its forward movement resets the lever F. A wide projection D<3> on the pendulum, and studs F<6> on the lever, prevent the lever from falling accidentally when the pendulum is not central. The projection D<3> and studs F<5> also prevent the mechanism from acting when the pendulum swings too rapidly through its operative point. The trigger may act directly on the rod P<1>, but preferably it is provided with a lever R<1>, Fig. 6, which must be raised by the pressure of the finger before the mechanism is put into gear.
