Abstract

117,918. Craig, A. M. June 29, 1917. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to mortars having a breech screw rotatable for locking in a cross-head .slidable in a rearward rigid extension of the breech forming a shell tray. A rear trough-shaped barrel extension 21, Fig. 2, is provided to support the shell 24 when the breech is open, and forms a guide for a cross-head 25 in which the breech block 30 is rotatably mounted. When the cross-head 25 is pushed forwards, the shell is rammed into the gun, the extractors 34 snap over the rim of the shell, and the breech is closed by rotating the breech block by a handle 35 so as to engage the interrupted threads 31 on the gun.
