Abstract
1,163,231. Microwave heating apparatus; R.F. couplings. HIRST (MICROWAVE HEATING) Ltd. 26 Feb., 1968 [7 March, 1967], No. 10592/67. Headings H4A and H5H. A serpentine assembly 11 of slotted waveguide sections 12 is provided at each end with a respective microwave generator 15, 16 so as to provide a more uniform heating of a sheet 13 of material than was possible with similar prior art apparatus using only one generator, e.g. Specification 1,050,493. Adjacent waveguide sections 12 are coupled by irises. The microwave power supplied by and incident on each magnetron 15 or 16 is monitored and compared, and the power supply to each magnetron is switched off when the ratio of incident to supplied power exceeds a predetermined value (see Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The sensing elements 19, 20, 21, 22 are mounted in the walls of the waveguide coupling sections 17, 18. An element 19 is a resistive loop directional coupler comprising a conductive body 25 with bores 26, 27. Bore 26 accommodates a resistor 28 connected by a loop 30 to the inner contact of a coaxial socket 31 screwed into bore 27.
