Abstract

981,967. Waveguide accessories. FERRANTI Ltd. June 4, 1963 [June 17, 1962], No. 21982/62. Heading H1W. A device for protecting a waveguide system against arcing comprises a section 11 of rectangular waveguide having in the centre of one broad wall an aperture 13 housing an electrode 14 the inner surface of which is co-planar with the waveguide wall. Occurrence of an arc between the electrode and the opposite broad wall of the guide causes the circuit through relay 23 (or equivalent device) to be completed and protective switches to be operated. The device is placed immediately on the output side of the generator since arcs occurring in a system invariably travel towards the generator. The electrode is provided with a flange 18 which, together with a dielectric disc 19 and the opposed outer surface 12<SP>11</SP> of the waveguide wall, forms a by-pass capacitor for R.F. energy. A plug 22 of lossy material is provided to absorb leakage.
