Abstract
1,221,794. Microwave heating apparatus. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 9 Jan., 1968 [16 Jan., 1967], No. 1307/68. Heading H5H. Microwave heating apparatus comprises a multimode cavity resonator 13 with multimode waveguides 11, 12, axially aligned on opposite sides thereof and open-ended to allow a workpiece 82, Fig. 4 (not shown), to be continuously moved therethrough, a vaned mode stirrer 4] being provided to accomplish uniform heating of the workpiece by periodically changing the field distribution in the cavity resonator 13 and waveguides 11, 12. The mode stirrer 41 is rotatably mounted in cavity resonator 13 in axial alignment with the waveguides 11, 12, and is preferably rotated by a flow of hot air through a duct 60, altnough other mechanical or electrical means may be used. The mode stirrer has vanes 42-49 (see also Fig. 3 (not shown)), of axial lengths at least #/2 and of differing radial lengths. Lossy wall waveguides 69, Fig. 1 (not shown), and 71 absorb radiation escaping from open-ended waveguides 11, 12, respectively, each lossy wall waveguide having a coiled insulating hose 73 inside a tubular aluminium member 72, the hose carrying water. The waveguide feed 37 is off-centre.
