Abstract

1,158,941. Casting shoe soles. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 27 July, 1966 [28 July, 1965], No. 33750/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A3] Non-cellular polyurethane soles are cast in situ on to a lasted shoe upper (20), (Fig. 9, not shown) by the co-operation therewith of a flexible polyurethane mould (18), (Fig. 8, not shown) defining a sole cavity (19) into which a reactant mixture is poured, via an opening (14) in the heel portion of the mould (18) which is maintained uppermost to facilitate the escape of entrapped air. The lasted shoe upper (20) is retained in sealed abutment, which may include a hot wax seal, with the bevelled upper surface (22) of an inwardly directed lip (21) around the periphery of the cavity (19) and the undersurface of which lip (21) defines the upper return surface of the sole. The reactant mixture is cured at room or moderate temperatures, e.g. no higher than 65‹ C., and the mould (18) is then stripped for re-use. The mould (18) is made by casting a polyurethane reactant mixture around a shoe 1 provided with an insert 13 to define the mould opening (14) and provided also with a polyurethane slab 11 whereby the inwardly directed lip (21) is defined. The slab 11 is provided by casting against a mould (8), (Fig. 5, not shown) which has been obtained by trimming to size a polyurethane casting taken around the shoe 1 (Fig. 1, not shown). Mould release agents, e.g. oil, wax, silicone or siloxane resin, are employed at each casting stage. Examples are given of preferred known polyurethane mixtures preferably employing polyolsoluble organic compounds of certain polyvalent metals.
