Abstract

1,157,826. Tantalum base alloys. NORTON CO. Aug. 23, 1966, No.37728/66. Addition to 1, 054, 049. Heading C7a. A tantalum alloy consists, apart from incidental impurities, of Ta or an alloy containing at least 60% Ta with the balance being one or more of the metals Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, V, Nb, Cr, Mo, W, U or Pa and an additive consisting of oxides of elements with atomic numbers 39 or 57-71, elements with atomic numbers 57-71 or mixtures of these elements or oxides with themselves or with yttrium, in an amount of 0À001-1% by weight and has an A. S. T. M. grain size number greater than 3 after cold working and heating at 3700‹ F. for one hour. The alloys are made by melting and remelting in an Ar atmosphere using a permanent tungsten electrode and a water cooled copper mould. The alloys may be annealed at 3300- 4000‹ F.
