Abstract

1,157,332. Tubular heat exchangers; water heaters. C.T.C. A.B. 11 July, 1966 [9 July, 1965], No. 31116/66. Headings F4A and F4S. Within the outer casing 30 of a heat exchanger, there are disposed four concentrically arranged fluid passages I to IV, each of which comprises a number of finned and helically wound tubes, such as 11, 12 and 13 in passage I, whose number, and consequently pitch, is so chosen that the tube length in any one passage is substantially equal to that of the other passages. A manifold 37 and branch pipes 35 associated therewith supply water to be heated to each of the tubes in the four passages, whilst a similar manifold 38 with associated branch pipes 36 withdraws the heated water from the tubes, the heating water being supplied to the exchanger through an inlet 33 from where it passes over all the tubes before leaving the exchanger through an outlet 34. The tube passages are formed around a central cylindrical core 10 and are separated from each other by thin walled sheet metal cylinders 14, 18 and 22. The number of tubes and the arrangement thereof in the passages may be varied, as depicted in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown. The exchanger may be employed as a water heater as shown in Fig. 6, wherein the exchanger 36 is open at its top, has a cold water inlet header 37, a heated water outlet header 38 and is disposed within a hot water storage tank 40 to which hot water is supplied through a connection 41 and from which cooled water is drained through connection 42. In operation, upon tapping heated water from header 38, cold water entering header 37, in passing through the exchanger 36, cools the hot water supplied by inlet 41 which subsequent to giving up its heat whilst passing through the exchanger enters a duct 43 and leaves the tank 40 through outlet 42.
