Abstract

1,114,722. Tap water heaters. GUSTAV OSPELT, HOVALWERK A.G. 10 Nov., 1966 [11 Nov., 1965], No. 50506/66. Heading F4A. A tap-water heater comprises a storage cistern 1, the water in which is heated by heat exchange with hot water flowing through pipes 6 arranged between inlet 9 and outlet 11. The cold supply to the cistern 1 passes through inner pipes 13 in counter-flow to the heating water, and is therefore preheated thereby, before passing into the body of the liquid in the cistern. All of the tubes 6 for the heating water, and the inlet and outlet pipes 13, 18, respectively, for the tap water are secured to a flange cover 4 of the cistern so that they may be removed as a unit for cleaning. The tubes 13 are then accessible on the removal of cover 15 of housing 14 into which they discharge. In a modification, Fig. 3, the heating water passage is defined by a square section helically wound tube 35 extending between inlet pipe 37 and outlet pipe 38. Tap water from inlet 41 again enters the body of the cistern in counter-flow to the heating water through helical passage 40 defined between the tube sections 34 and the cylindrical wall 39. Tap water is withdrawn through discharge pipe 43, retained in a push fit position in a tapered aperture in cylinder 39 by resilient support 44, and outlet 47. All fittings save pipe 43 which is retained by support 44, may again be withdrawn as a unit with cover 33 for cleaning purposes, the wall 39 and tube 34 then being separable to provide access to passage 40, after removal of wedge locks 48. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2), the helical passages for the heating water and the tap water supply are formed by a corrugated cylindrical sheet (23) located between outer and inner coaxial cylinders (20, 21) the inner cylinder being separable from the other by release of wedge locks to provide access to the water passages for cleaning, after removal of the unit from the cistern. A plastics bladder (not shown) may be inserted in the cistern to protect its inner surfaces from corrosion.
