Abstract

1,152,951. Modifying metallic surfaces. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. May 24, 1966 [May 25, 1965], No.23189/66. Heading C7U. Sheets of e.g. steel or galvanized steel are formed with a protecting layer by preparing an aqueous emulsion from either a butadiene series synthetic rubber or vinylidene chloride modified with a polarizing radical of the formula - COOH, = C-C \ / O =, -CONH 2 or CONHCH 2 OH, adding thereto a dispersion of chromic acid, phosphoric acid and a reducing agent for chromic acid, contacting the surface of the sheet with the resulting liquor and curing at e.g. 260 to 330‹C. The reaction being such that 96 to 100% of the hexavalent chromium is converted to trivalent chromium. The reducing agent may be millet-jelly, sucrose, glycol or glycerine.
