Abstract

1379731 Chromizing ferrous substrates ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 30 Dec 1971 [5 Jan 1971] 496/71 Addition to 1319801 Headings C7D and C7F Ferrous substrates containing maximum 0.01%C which are either decarburized steels or steels containing a carbide forming element e.g. Ti or Nb are coated with an adhesive, Cr powder and hydrated Al or Mg halide or Mg oxyhalide and then heated for chromizing. The halide or oxyhalide may act as the adhesive or be added separately, preferably as an aqueous solution containing 10-1000 g/l. halide. The substrate is coated with 1-20 g. halide/sq. ft. and the pH of the solution may be controlled at 1.2-2.5 by adding an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate or alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate to the sol- ution. The Cr may be added as Fe/Cr powder minimum 20%Cr, from a gas suspension, electrostatically, by a vibrator, a metering drum or a fluidized bed.
