Abstract

In the double-focusing mass spectrometer shown, the dimensions indicated are so chosen that the first and second order aberration coefficients B 1 , B 2 , B 11 and B 12 are all equal to zero and #e # 110 degrees, r e /r m #, 1À40 and d/r m # 2À0, where d=L<SP>11</SP>e + L<SP>1</SP>m. In addition #<SP>1</SP>= #<SP>11</SP> = 0 and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> # #, where #<SP>1</SP> and #<SP>11</SP> are the angles of deviation of the median ion path from the normal to the pole faces at entry and exit and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are the boundary radii at entry and exit. The fifth aberration coefficient B 22 is not equal to zero but is equal to some small value. #m lies between 75 and 100 degrees.
