Abstract
1341357 Mass separators W M BRUBAKER 2 March 1972 [3 March 1971] 9702/72 Heading H1D The D.C. field in the neighbourhood of the ion entrance aperture of a hyperbolic field mass filter is neutralized by one or more auxiliary electrodes so positioned between the ends of the primary electrodes 14, 18 of the filter and the entrance aperture that the A.C. field produced in the neighbourhood of the entrance aperture by the primary electrodes is substantially unaffected. In the quadruple arrangement of Fig. 2, four auxiliary electrodes, only 44 and 48 shown, held at potentials opposite in sense to those of the adjacent primary electrodes, are mounted in recesses in the end plate, 49 of the filter, in which the entrance aperture is formed, such that their faces are flush with the surface of the plate. A monopole arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) is also described.
