964,066. Charged-particle beam focusing apparatus. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Nov. 20, 1962 [Nov. 25, 1961], No. 43826/62. Heading H1D. A multi-pole magnetic lens, with hyperbolic field lines between adjacent opposing magnetic poles, for focusing beams of charged particles, comprises a slotted annular core 5, and a winding distributed among the slots and consisting of coils concentric with each polar axis. As shown, a four-pole lens includes a core formed by a stack of internally-slotted laminations, and four sets of coils. The coils a i to f i (i equals 1, 2, 3 or 4) of each set are connected in series or in parallel and form the winding of one pole. The number of conductors in the coils a i to f i may be 99, 92, 79, 61, 38, 13, respectively. Any slight departure from the required hyperbolic field may be corrected by connecting resistances across the individual coils or across groups of coils. The magnetic field may be rotated along the axis of the lens by arranging the slots in oblique or helical fashion.
