Abstract

A hammer comprises a head portion 11 and a striking face or faces 14, the head or the part thereof which is engaged by the, or each, striking face being formed of a material which is softer and more resilient than the material of the striking face or faces. The head portion may be formed from a rubber-like plastics material such as polyurethane or a thermoplastics material such as nylon and the striking face may be of rawhide, copper, nylon or rubber and lead alloys. The striking faces and head may be provided with a threaded or splined spigot 15 adapted to fit into a threaded or plain socket respectively formed in the head; alternatively, the socket may be formed in the striking face and the spigot in the head. In operation, the softer material of the head flows into the threads or splines and thereby prevents the striking faces from working loose.
