Abstract

1291781 Tools for use with percussive machines PADLEY & VENABLES Ltd 7 Jan 1971 [21 Jan 1970] 2957/70 Heading B4C A tool for use with a percussive machine comprises an elongate bar having a shank 1, a working head 3 and an intermediate stem 2, and a sound muffling collar assembly 6 having a length less than the stem and being secured thereto in the region of the mid-length part of the bar. The assembly comprises a layer 7 of elastomeric material, e.g. rubber, extending around the stem and a metal, e.g. steel, collar 8 which extends around the layer and the stem to retain the layer on the stem. The collar assembly is keyed to the stem to prevent longitudinal movement of the collar assembly relative to the stem, e.g. by means of an annular groove 5 (Fig. 1) or an annular rib 10 (Fig. 2). In the Fig. 2 embodiment the layer of elastomeric material comprises two semicylindrical moulded rubber elements each including a recess corresponding to the shape of the rib 10. The elastomeric material may additionally to the keying be adhesively secured or bonded to the stem. The weight of the collar assembly may be increased by embedding lead shot in the elastomeric material or by mixing lead dust with the material prior to moulding. The working head may comprise a point (as shown), or, for example, a spade or a chisel.
