Divided out of 9872/53. Classes 9(.1) and 119 In a cartridge-operated tool for firing bits or nails into hard material, a plunger 52, Fig. 1, in the barrel 10 has temporarily attached to it the bit or nail and a stop 61 of hard steel provided with a cushioning washer 63 of mild steel is located at the end of the barrel, the stop 61 and washer 63 having apertures which permit the passage of the bit or nail but not the plunger 52. As shown in Fig. 1, the washer 63 engages in a chamfered recess 66 of the stop 61. In an alternative form, Fig. 3, the washer 63 rests on the inner face of the stop 61 and is held by rubber cement 67. The apertures in the washer and stop permit the passage of a reduced end portion 53 (Fig. 2, not shown) of the plunger 52 to which the head 51 of the bit or nail is temporarily attached by a cap 55 or by engagement of the head 51 in a recess in the reduced portion 53.
