Abstract

1,148,496. Jacks for use in building construction. RICHARD COSTAIN Ltd. 29 March, 1966 [31 March, 1965], No. 13738/66. Heading B8J. [Also in Division E1] In a method of constructing buildings (see Divisions E1-E2) in which successive storeys are constructed at or near ground level and subsequently raised by a plurality of jacking devices to permit the construction of a further storey therebeneath, horizontal level is maintained by a control device during a jacking operation in which each jacking device rises by a small predetermined sub-step of the order of ¢ mm. by preventing the jacking devices from again being actuated until all the jacking devices have correctly completed the previous sub-step. In a jacking system for carrying out the above process jacks 1 are arranged in groups I, II. Each jack 1 comprises a cylinder 2 in which slides a piston 3 secured to a pistonrod 4. Pressure liquid is supplied to one side 5 of the piston 3 through pipes 7, 8 from a pump 23 driven by a motor 24. A nut 9 threaded on the piston-rod 4 is movable by an auxiliary mechanism, which controls the jack stroke, comprising ratchet teeth 10 around the nut 9 co-operating with a pawl 11 actuated by an hydraulic cylinder 12 so that the nut 9 effects a follow-up movement during the jack stroke and also serves as a locking device in event of pressure failure. Switches 20, 22 and contacts 17, 18 ensure that a following ¢ mm. sub-step can only be initiated when all the jacks 1 have correctly completed the previous sub-step as indicated by signals passed to a memory device 50. A number of sub-steps form a jacking step, which may correspond to the stroke of the jacks 1 or some selected lesser distance, and after such a step the load carried by a particular jack is temporarily supported to enable the jack to be lowered and a spacer block inserted to permit a further jacking step to be made. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,102,274.
