Abstract

1,130,570. Mounting flexible plates on printing cylinders. HAMADA PRINTING PRESS MFG. CO. Ltd. 6 Dec., 1965 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 51700/65. Heading B6C. A printing cylinder comprises a flexible printing plate 53 and a locking device arranged in a longitudinal gap in the cylinder for releasably securing the plate by engagement with holes therein. The device comprises a group of stationary pawls 35 and of movable pawls 36 each such group being distributed longitudinally of the cylinder, the stationary pawls engaging a row of such holes distributed along one margin of the plate whilst the movable pawls engage another row of such holes distributed along the adjacent margin. The movable pawls are spring loaded by individual springs 46 and means including a rockable shaft 8 are provided for operating these pawls. Each movable pawl comprises a main arm pivoted on an axis 44 which is eccentric of the axis of the rockable shaft and laterally displaceable by rocking the shaft, and further comprises a supporting arm 47 rigid with the main arm 41, a first spring 46 arranged between the shaft and the supporting arm to bias the main arm into engagement with the printing plate, and a second spring 50 arranged between the main arm and the cylinder to act in the circumferential direction of the cylinder, and to assist the first spring. The means for operating the movable pawls comprise a linkage 10, 12, Fig. 2, arranged externally at one end of the cylinder, the linkage having one end connected to the shaft for rocking the same and thereby operating the movable pawls whilst the other end may be connected to a removable manually operative bar 33. The printing cylinder may carry two printing plates and have two longitudinal gaps each accommodating a locking device the plates being disposed with their circumferential ends in opposition on the cylinder, one locking device being disposed diametrically opposite the other. The means for actuating associated movable pawls are disposed at opposite ends of the cylinder.
