Abstract

1,129,512. Calculating-apparatus. E. G. BRAHA. 7 Dec., 1965 [9 Feb., 1965], No. 5612/65. Heading G4B. A calculator having parts so arranged that when they are moved to positions representing the relative directions and magnitudes of three measured strains at a point on a body, the Mohr strain circle is determined. As illustrated in Fig. 1 scale 6 is moved to align with line L the point of scale S-S corresponding to the middle value read on the strain gauges. Slides T and R are moved so that edges Y-Y and X-X register with the other strain gauge values on scale S-S. Angular slides 8, 9 are then moved so that edge lines RB and LB respectively bisect perpendicularly the lines extending along scales A-A, C-C between line L and lines Y-Y, X-X. Lines LB, RB intersect at O which is the centre of the Mohr strain circle. A protractor (Fig. 2, not shown) may now replace slide (T) to measure the angle (a) between the plane of one of the principal strains and that of one of the measured strains. The angle between slides 8, 9 is adjustable to allow for varying angles of strain gauge rosette.
