660,514. Protractors. GORTON, V. Aug. 3,. 1949 [Aug. 24, 1948], No. 20182/49. Class 97 (iii). A combination square and bevel comprises a stock 3 formed at one end to engage slidably a graduated ruler 6 and a bevel member 14 pivoted to the stock by a bolt 19 and having a curved edge protractor portion 15 whose graduations are read against an index 28 on the stock and also having a set-square portion with two straight adjacent edges 26, 27 at rightangles to each other. The stock is provided with means for locking it to the ruler 6 comprising, for example, a bolt 10 whose upper end is shaped as a catch to engage in a groove in the ruler, a finger nut 13, accessible through an opening 12 in the stock, being provided to operate the bolt. Preferably the bevel member 14 comprises two pairs of plates fitted one on either side of the stock 3 and pivoted on the common pivot 19, each plate being provided with an arcuate slot 23 concentric with the pivot through which passes a bolt 24 carrying a locking nut 25 for securing the bevel member in any desired setting. The bevel member may be fitted with one or more spirit levels 21 and may carry tables relating to rafter cut data. An adjustable stop-screw 29 fitted on the lower portion of the stock 3 limits the travel of the bevel member towards the stock.
