' COMBINATION-SAW.
To all within z'trmay concern:
vention Be it known that I, EDWARD BALOD, a citizenof Russia, having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, residin at New York cit in the county'of New ork and State of ew' York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Saws, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention has relation to'carpenter tools with particular reference to wood saws,
and has for an object to provide a woodsaw in which there is embodied a number of features which will permit the performance of functions other than the mere sawing of wood, such as 'the determination of'right angles and other angles as well as the measurement of linear dimensions, etc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination saw consisting of a sawblade of conventional type having described upon one edge a scale divided into inches or other units of measurement and having a handle formed in such a manner that it-may be engaged against the edge of the. material to be cut to form a guide, the'graduated edge of the blade being located at right angles to said guide serving as a rule whereby indicating marks may be made upon the material to facilitate the sawing thereof.
In addition to the foregoing this invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of arts to be hereinafter described and particu farly set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear,-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a tool constructedin accordance with my in- Fig. 2 is an'edge view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the manner in which my improved. tool can be moved upon the work whenseleeting an angle at which said workis to be cut. a With reference to the drawings, 10 indicates a blade having the general appearance of a conventional saw blade of the cross-cut saw type, and 11 indicates a handle formed in a conventional manner with the exception that at the of with the bla e the handle is provided with an extension 12 projecting .a short dis- Speciflcation of Letters Patent.

tance beyond the back ed e .of the blade; Also, thematerial of the andle to which the blade is attached is provided with a' relatively broad surface 13 adapted to bear.
against the edge of a'plank or the like to thus form a guide-whereby the saw may be moved along, the back edge 14 of the blade being exactly at right angles tothe edge of the plank, etc, against which :the guide 131 bears. The surface of the blade adjacent the back edge 14-. is graduated be neath its other units 5 of measurements as indicated at 15 to form a scale for measuring linear dimensions. Also, I prefer-to inscribe upon the face-of the saw a line indicated at 16 which extends from the corner of the handle or the guide face across the blade at" provided inthe rear or back edgeof the. saw
blade, one face or edge 17 of said notch being coincident with the line 16, and the other face of the said notch lying at an angle, preferably a right angle, to said line 1:6. This construction facilitates the positioning of the saw with the edge 17 of the nptclliI in alinement with the edge of the p an In practice the edge or portion 1 7' of the notch can be readily posit1oned on the edge of the plank and in the use of the saw should the line 16 become defaced or blurred, the notch will serve to locate the angle desired.
When the blade is placed upon a plank or the like the surface or guide 13 bears against the edge thereof, and the back or rear edge of theblade forms a rule along which a pencil or marker may be moved to inscribe a line upon the plank at right angles to the extending lines as well as-the graduations, the lower corner of the handle or guide face becomes a fulcrum against the edge of theplank and the saw blade is moved until the edge or the face 17" of the notch is 'alined In using the notches-and with the edge of the plank. A marker is then run along-the back edge 14 of the blade 1 passing over the notches and the line inscribed upon the plank will be exactly 45 degrees relative to either edge thereof. The
marker may be-inserted in the notch 17 to inscribe an indication upon the object to be measured. 5
Fig. 3 illustrates the manner in which the .tool is used when marking the plank or other work. A series of angles 18 is shown being alined with the capable of per tions of Sewing and which at the same time 7 :Other uses and on the saw blade, the (rifle of 45-degrees when the saw is swung about point-1'9. In
a similar manner each of the lines or notches indicating 'the respective angles can be brought into r 'ster with. or moved coincident to the ge of the plank as will be understood.
advantages will readil occur to those familiar with the art to whic this invention appertains. It-will however be seen that'I rovide a novel tool which is fiirmance of the ordinary funcmay be utilized as a square, or to get an deslred angle, thus eliminating these too which are ordinarily included inthe equip- .ment of a carpenter and whichare more or less hea I and bulky While have illustrated and'described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realized that in practice various alterationstherein may be made. I therefore reserve'the right and privilege of changing the form of the detalls .of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the aflixed thereto and provided with a lateral ge of the plank 'corner on the handle a "'maybemovedr i a I involvihg a sawblade having a a surface at right-angles to the rear edgeof 3 85 i the'bl'ade, and
eextendblade forming one face of anan ing from a blade to the ower cornero'f the han 1e,
25A tool involving a saw blade, a handle-10 afiixed thereto having a lateral surface arranged at an angle toan edge of the blade, a' series of gra nations provided on said" edge, and a notch inv said edge with one facethereof coihcident with 'a lme drawn from, "45 i said facethrough a corner of the aforesaid handle. Y
3. A tool involving a saw blade, a handle 'aflixed thereto and provided with a lateral surface at an angle tothe rear of the edge lio of the blade, graduations on said edge," and other means associatedwiththe rear edg g of the blade arranged form a series 0 angles a face of each angle extendin from a .point on the reared .4. A tool handle, a guide havm a-straight face ad-f jacent said handle an arranged at an an e0 gleto the rear edge of'the blade, gradua- Q tions on said edge, and other means associated with saidrear edgeof the blade to formv an angle between the rear edge of said blade and the lower corner of the aforesaid guide 5 about which latter the saw may be' moved.
\ 'In'testimony whereof I aflixm si ature.
