LOREN E. MURGH DEGREE MARKING ADDITION TO A CAR- PENTERS COMBINATION SQUARE Loren E. Murch, Auburn, Calif.
Application March 6, 1953, Serial No. 340,715
1 Claim. (Cl. SIS-93) This invention relates to a new and useful improvernent in a tool for use by carpenters and builders.
There is generally provided, in combination with a combination square body and a blade, a movable leg pivotally connected on the 45 angle side of such body. A combination square consisting of a straight edge blade having the conventional measuring indicia marked thereon and a body attached thereto by means of a manual set screw, such body having one side or edge perpendicular and the opposite side or edge at a 45 angle relative to said blade and the perpendicular side. The leg having an arcuate shaped arm attached to its one end portion and having means for adjusting same through a 45 arc.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device that when attached to a combination square body in the manner described it may be adjusted to any angle from to 45 Another object of the invention is the provision of a device that affords a means for the laying off of an angle from 0 to 45 in the space between the angular side or edge of the body of a combination square and the adjacent edge of the blade when the device is pivotally attached to the inner end of the top ofthe said body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device that will provide an auxiliary, or additional, means for a combination square, as described, which will further the uses thereof.
Objects, other than those stated herein, attainable by the invention will be readily observed by a reading of the description herein and a reference to the associated drawing, in which:
Figure l is a view in perspective of a carpenters combination square with the invention attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the parts of a spring operated plunger as a means for holding the device in adjusted positions.
Figure 3 shows a pin for attaching the device on the body of a square.
Figure 4 is a perspective sectional view of the leg of the device.
Figure 5 is a vertical view of the arcuate arm attached to the leg, such leg shown in cross section.
Describing the drawing more in detail:
The numeral refers to a conventional 45 body attachd to the blade 11 by means of the manual set screw A, and the 10A refers to the arcuate form slot in the lower portion of the body 10, 10B designating the 45 angle side or edge of the body 10.
The leg part of the invention is designated by 12, such leg being movably attached on the body 10 by means of a threaded pin 14 inserted through an opening 12A in the divided ends of the arm and tbreadably engaging in the one end of the upper or top edge portion of the body 10.
The leg 12 has a trough or channel form and bisected longitudinally into two complementary parts as shown by 12B. Such leg is attached to 10 as described with the nited States Patent 0 "ice bisected side towards the lower edge of the blade 11. An arcuate shaped arm 13 having a bifurcated end portion as shown by 13A is atfixed to the inside surface of the leg 12 in such manner that the V-shaped opening in the end thereof registers with the opening between the two complementary parts of the leg 12.
The arm 13 is adapted by reason of its shape to slidably engage in the arcuate slot 10A in the body 10 adjust the leg 12 to mark any angle from 0 to 45 The arm 13 is provided with a plurality of serrations, or teeth, indicated by 19, which are formed in its lower or outer edge and degree indicia carried on its face such indicia including 0 to 45.
The leg 12 is secured in any of its adjusted angles, or angular positions, by means of a plunger 16 having a milled head 15 for manual operation of same. plunger being inserted through that portion of the body between the said arcuate slot and the outer and lower edge of the body 10, with the inner end of the plunger, marked 16A, adapted to engage in the serrations, or teeth 19 of the arm 13. The end 16A of the plunger is normally held in secure engagement in the said teeth by means of a compression spring 17 which is disposed around a portion of the plunger and between an inner Washer 18 and the bottom wall of a recess formed in the adjacent lower edge of the said slot 10A. The milled end part of the plunger has a recess 15A formed in its shank in which the threaded end portion of the plunger 16 is received.
In the operation of the device it will be understood that it being movably attached on the body 10 by means of the leg 12 and the arcuate arm 13 engaging in the slot 10A, it is free to move across the space between the said blade 11 and the angular side of the body 10 by withdrawing the plunger end 16A from engagement with the teeth 19 by means of the milled end 15. With the leg 12 moved into the desired angular position, the plunger is released and the compression spring 17 will cause the end 16A to engage the tooth in alignment therewith and securely hold the leg in such adjusted position.
It will also be observed that, by reason of the space between the two parts of the leg, the leg is adapted to be adjusted into a position in straight alignment with the upper edge of the body 10 by partially encompassing the lower edge of the blade 11 within such space.
It will be further observed that by reason of the attachment of the invention and its operation, all as described herein, this invention provides a new, very useful and much needed device for the uses as specified herein.
What I claim is:
In a combination with a carpenter's tool having a blade with a straight edge, a body attached to said blade and having a straight edge at 45 to the edge of the blade, said body having an arcuate slot, a leg of channellike form pivotally connected at one end to said body, an arcuate arm movably positioned in said slot, said leg having a longitudinal slot arranged to receive said blade, said arm having a bifurcated end connected to the leg on each side of the longitudinal slot and arranged to receive said blade, and means on the body to engage and hold the arcuate arm in adjusted positions.
