[Also in Group XIX] A measuring scale is provided with a groove 15, Fig. 2, along one longitudinal edge near the front surface 1 of the scale, a bevelled edge 3 for ruling or measuring extending outwards from the groove 15 to the edge of the reverse surface 2, Fig. 2, a fixed pointer, e.g. a mark 7, Fig. 1, on the edge 3 and aligned with the zeros or starting-points of a number of differentlygraduated length scales 5, Fig. 1, marked on the surface 1 and a slidable cursor 14 having a rib 20, Fig. 2, riding in the groove 15, an opposite rib 21, Fig. 2, engaging the other longitudinal edge 4, Fig. 2, of the scale and a pointer 10, Fig. 1, overlying the bevelled edge 3 and movable along it, the cursor 14 being constructed, e.g. transparently, with an index line 11, Fig. 1, aligned with pointer 10, so that the distance between the fixed and movable pointers 7 and 10 can be read directly on any of the graduated scales 5. The scale may be bevelled and grooved both sides, e.g. as shown in Fig. 2, and the cursor may carry a marker adjustable to indicate a particular graduated scale.
