A linear measuring instrument having a flexible measuring tape in which the origins of the graduation systems on the respective faces are relatively displaced, has a casing 1 provided with a window 7 and reference mark 8, and internal guide means e.g. a rib 10, rollers 12 (see Fig. 4, not shown) or lugs 14 (see Fig. 5, not shown) for guiding the tape parallel to the window to facilitate reading the graduations. Avernier scale may either be marked on the window or placed adjacent to it. The window may be formed as a magnifying glass.
