1,127,770. Overload protection devices for lifting gear. M. B. WILD & CO. Ltd. 10 Dec., 1965 [30 Dec., 1964], No. 52775/64. Heading B8B. An overload protection device for the hoist mechanism of a crane comprises an hydraulic system operating a winding drum motor switch and a channel sectioned saddle member 11 supported on an hydraulic plunger 14 and supporting an equalizing pulley 10 which takes half the load to be lifted on a hook carried by a flexible member supported between the equalizing pulley 10 and the winding drum. The plunger 14 is movable in a cylinder 13 which is in communication with a further cylinder 15 having a plunger 16 therein. The area of cylinder 13 is greater than that of cylinder 15 so that the plunger 16 therein moves a greater distance but with less force acting thereon, than the plunger 14. The plunger 16 is biased into its retracted position by a spring 19 acting on a flange 17 on the plunger. When a predetermined load on the pulley 10 is exceeded, the plunger 16 compresses spring 19 and actuates the winding motor switch 22 via lever 21, whereupon winding is halted.
