In a passive stabilizing system for a ship, floating drilling platform or floating aerodrome, a rectangular tank 1 partially filled with liquid 2 has a horizontal divider 3 located centrally below the static liquid level and extending completely across the tank in the direction parallel to the axis of roll the length of the horizontal divider 3 being 40 to 60% of the length of the tank. The free ends of the divider are shaped to facilitate flow and during oscillations about the axis of roll liquid flows beneath and over the divider at different mass rates. The system may be used to reduce pitching of any floating structure when the ratio of length to beam is such that a stabilizing system for pitching motion is feasible.
