Abstract
1,177,386. Stabilizing ships. JOHN J. McMULLEN ASSOCIATES Inc. 30 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14587/67. Heading B7M. A ship stabilizer of the passive-tank type comprises an elongate tank 10 orientated athwartships and containing a liquid in a freesurface condition, the oscillatory motion of said liquid in response to rolling of the ship being controlled by a plurality of damping elements 18, 20, which extend from top to bottom of the tank and are pivotable about the axes of vertical shafts 24 so that they can be set in different positions, whereby the damping of said motion can be varied. The position of each element may be fixed by a finger 30 engaging with a toothed gear-wheel 28 attached to the associated shaft 24. The profile of each element in a transverse cross-section is non-circular and may be either elliptical (as shown) or square, Fig. 4 (not shown). The shaft 22 associated with each element may be situated centrally thereof, Fig. 5 (not shown), instead of eccentrically as shown. Alternatively, the elements extend from one side wall of the tank to the other in a fore-and-aft direction, Fig. 6 (not shown), the profile of each element in a transverse cross-section being, e.g., rectangular. The liquid in the tank may be water or oil and may contain particles of solid matter in suspension.
