Abstract

1,188,849. Stabilizing floating structures. PIKE CORP. OF AMERICA. 20 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 42794/67. Heading B7M. A floating structure 10 is stabilized against rolling movement induced by wave action by a body 20 suspended a substantial distance beneath the structure and connected to it so that a force moment is transmitted from the stabilizer body to the structure. The construction of the stabilizer body 20 is such that it entraps a mass of water on movement of the body in a direction transverse to a line between the floating structure and the body and permits water to flow freely through the body on movement of the body in a direction parallel to that line. In the embodiment shown fore- and-aft stabilizers 20 are open ended cylinders fixed to the structure by struts 21, 22. Parallel plates, crossed members or open-ended bodies having square cross-section are also shown as the stabilizer body 20.
